While I don't teach this year, in my floating from school to school, I occasionally interact with a cadre of kids that I have worked with for over 2 years. The kids aren't easy. They can be rascals. And many of them have endured school and personal experiences that have given them a resilience and maturity that I am still figuring out for myself. They humble me, and they have taught me a lot of lessons about what kind of person I want to become.
I love them, and want to see them become self-assured, directed adults who do things that make them feel proud of themselves. Maybe they know this, but I am proud of them already.
